"A common misconception in building software is that if every component in a system is individually verified to be safe, the system itself is also safe." - samczsun

A few days ago, everyone's favourite blockchain got forked; how times have changed, eh?

A few years ago, Ethereum was so solid that JP Morgan built their inter-bank ledger JPM Quorum on it. This week, however, ETH fell flat on its face and rumours have it the ETH burning could be seen from space.

But this isn't a criticism of Ethereum nor Vitalik; resilience is yet theoretical, and the trilemma may have went out of style but it never left.

Lesson: The integration of n good things can generate n^n bad things, which reminds us of Godel's First Incompleteness Theorem:

"The first incompleteness theorem shows that, in formal systems that can express basic arithmetic, a complete and consistent finite list of axioms can never be created: each time an additional, consistent statement is added as an axiom, there are other true statements that still cannot be proved, even with the new axiom. If an axiom is ever added that makes the system complete, it does so at the cost of making the system inconsistent. It is not even possible for an infinite list of axioms to be complete, consistent, and effectively axiomatized." - Wikipedia

Life doesn't conform to axioms, and that's why we invoke the mantissa on floating point irrationalities.

So, Given that individually-configured items can still break post-integration, don't be so hard on yourself the next time something fails. It's not your fault, though as a Developer you'll probably be blamed for it.

Luckily, most people blaming you couldn't fix their nails if their life depended on it. Get in touch if they won't shut up about it.
